9 killed and dozens swept away in Swat flooding in Pakistan as government fails to protect the civilians.

Nine people died after 18 tourists, including women and children, were carried away by flash floods on Friday in the Swat River in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
A tragic incident occurred in the scenic region of Swat on June 27, when a sudden flash flood swept away 18 members of a tourist family, resulting in the confirmed deaths of nine individuals, while the rest remain unaccounted for. The family had been visiting the area and was reportedly having breakfast near the river when the disaster struck.

According to local residents, the family had crossed to the other side of the river shortly before the flood occurred. The sudden rise in water levels left them trapped mid-river,
unable to return. Eyewitnesses claim that rescue teams arrived approximately three hours after the incident, by which time the strong currents had already carried away several members of the group.

Rescue personnel later recovered nine bodies, while the search for the remaining missing individuals is ongoing. The identities of the victims have not been officially released.

Following the incident, local residents staged a protest against the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, citing dissatisfaction with the delayed emergency response and the lack of necessary resources to manage such disasters. Protestors demanded that authorities take serious steps to ensure timely and efficient rescue operations in the future.

Swat has witnessed similar tragedies in the past. In 2022, a group of brothers was swept away by floodwaters under comparable circumstances. At that time, no helicopter support was available to assist in the rescue, despite calls for help. In the current case as well, no helicopter was dispatched to aid the stranded family, which has further fueled public frustration.

Recurring Pattern and Need for Preparedness
Such incidents have become increasingly frequent in Swat, particularly during the monsoon season. While the region is a popular destination for tourists due to its natural beauty, its vulnerability to flash floods remains a serious concern.

Residents and observers have urged the provincial government to prioritize the development of comprehensive disaster management systems. This includes the availability of helicopters for emergency rescues, timely deployment of rescue teams, installation of early warning systems, and the establishment of permanent emergency response units in high-risk areas.

The comparison has also been drawn between the quick deployment of helicopters for non-emergency situations—such as drying grounds during major sporting events—and their unavailability during life-threatening crises. Such concerns have added to the ongoing debate about the allocation of resources and priorities within the country’s emergency management framework.

The incident underscores the pressing need for improved coordination between local authorities, rescue agencies, and disaster response units. As tourism continues to grow in northern Pakistan, ensuring visitor safety must become a top priority for both provincial and federal governments.

Efforts to recover the remaining missing individuals are still underway, and authorities have stated that investigations into the response timeline and coordination will be conducted.
