The US and Israel are executing a scheme to strip Jordan of its custodianship over Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque. The plan targets one of Islam’s holiest sites to erase decades of Hashemite guardianship under the guise of “multi-faith” management. Middle East Eye reports it seeks to dismantle the Islamic Waqf and replace it with direct Israeli oversight.
The initiative is being championed by Jared Kushner and US Ambassador Mike Huckabee. Sources say the proposal was discussed with the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, and Egypt, while Saudi Arabia opposes it. The plan would end the Jordanian-backed Waqf and create a new Israeli-run authority for Al-Aqsa.
The leaked framework declares Al-Aqsa a “multi-faith centre” with formalized large-group Jewish prayer. Israel would control appointments of imams, preachers, and senior officials, including approval of Friday sermons. US officials confirmed a draft vision to recast the compound for Islam, Christianity, and Judaism.
If implemented, it would normalize Israeli control and erase over 100 years of Hashemite custodianship. Jordan’s Foreign Ministry called it a “flagrant violation of international law” and a provocation to 1.9 billion Muslims. Officials warn it risks major unrest across the region.
Legally, this shatters Article 9 of the 1994 treaty and the Fourth Geneva Convention by seizing Jordan’s custodianship. The impact is a direct assault on 1.9 billion Muslims, erasing Muslim sovereignty and igniting regional explosion. Eight Arab and Muslim states in April 2026 called it a “flagrant violation of international law”.
This is not “multi-faith access” but a calculated colonial takeover to erase Muslim sovereignty over Al-Aqsa. With US backing, Israel is moving to dismantle Jordan’s legal custodianship and rewrite the status quo by force. If unchecked, it will set a precedent for annexing Jerusalem’s holiest sites and ignite a crisis far beyond Palestine.
