Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has for a second time renewed his call for U.S President Donald Trump to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, crediting his intervention with helping secure a ceasefire between Pakistan and India. In a statement posted on social media on October 9, Shehbaz Sharif described Trump’s role in easing tensions between the two nuclear-armed countries as historic and expressed hope that his efforts would receive international recognition.

Shehbaz Sharif said Trump’s timely intervention helped bring Islamabad and New Delhi “back from the brink” and secure a ceasefire that, according to the prime minister, remains in effect. Pakistan had previously nominated Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his role in de-escalating the crisis between the two South Asian neighbours.

The renewed appeal comes amid continuing controversy over the extent of Washington’s role in resolving the India-Pakistan confrontation. Pakistan has credited Trump’s diplomatic engagement with helping bring about the ceasefire, while India has maintained that the understanding was reached directly between the two countries’ militaries.

The nomination also comes against the backdrop of U.S military aggression against Iran and Washington’s close strategic relationship with the Israeli occupation. This contrast raises questions about how international recognition for diplomatic efforts is weighed against a government’s military actions elsewhere. Pakistan has previously expressed concern over military escalation involving Iran and called for regional stability.

Trump has repeatedly highlighted his claimed role in resolving international conflicts and expressed his desire to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. However, a nomination does not guarantee the award, which is decided by the Norwegian Nobel Committee through its own selection process.

Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan hoped Trump’s efforts to promote peace and prevent further conflict in South Asia would receive due recognition. His renewed statement places Islamabad’s diplomatic outreach to Washington alongside its continuing effort to acknowledge what it views as Trump’s contribution to preventing a wider confrontation with India.
