The United States is preparing to unleash its most powerful non-nuclear weapon on Iranian soil, not as a decisive military solution, but as a calculated theater of destruction and psychological terror, a reality confirmed by its own military planners in disclosures to CNN. What Washington is openly contemplating is not a precision strike to neutralize a threat, but the use of indiscriminate, massive surface annihilation against Iranian energy infrastructure and nuclear sites, while internally acknowledging that the weapon will fail to achieve its stated strategic objectives. This is not warfare designed to win, it is performance designed to terrify.

According to the network, citing individuals directly familiar with the operational discussions, the Pentagon is actively weighing the use of the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast, the MOAB, infamous as the mother of all bombs and the largest conventional bomb in the American arsenal, for strikes against Iran’s energy grid and nuclear infrastructure. Among the specific sites named is the heavily fortified complex buried under Pickaxe Mountain, known inside Iran as Kolang Kouh.

What exposes the true intent behind this planning is the conscious decision to proceed despite knowing it will fail. The same officials who are floating the weapon acknowledge that it is structurally incapable of achieving Washington’s declared objective. They question whether it can ever punch through the deep granite layers shielding Iran’s underground facilities, the very facilities it is supposed to eliminate.

One source with direct knowledge of the weapon’s capabilities told CNN in blunt terms that the MOAB is essentially a weapon of mass information warfare, useful only for flattening enormous surface areas and little beyond that. The source stressed it was never built to function as a deep-penetration bunker buster, exposing the gap between American rhetoric and American capability.

The consequences of this choice are therefore known in advance. While the bomb would inflict colossal surface-level devastation and inevitably produce civilian deaths, officials themselves doubt it would compel Tehran to surrender or produce any definitive battlefield victory. Its purpose, they concede, is not military but psychological a calculated operation to create terror and imagery, allowing President Donald Trump to choreograph a symbolic spectacle of American power.

A second official confirmed the same logic, stating the weapon is being considered for its psychological effect precisely because Washington possesses no munition in its current inventory that can breach Iran’s deepest fortified installations. In other words, the US is reaching for its biggest bomb because it has no bomb that actually works.

This weapon has only been used once in the history of warfare dropped on Afghanistan in 2017. Now, observers are describing its potential reuse against Iran not as a path to winning a war, but as a path to leaving one. A final, indiscriminate show of overwhelming force designed to project dominance on camera while Washington searches behind the scenes for a way to climb out of a conflict it cannot win through destruction.
