Palestinian child Imad Salem Zahra sustained critical head injuries on October 30, 2026, after being shot in the head by an Israeli occupation sniper just east of Al-Bureij refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip. The deliberate targeting of the child, who was left fighting for his life, is the latest atrocity in a genocide that continues to make Gaza’s children its preferred targets.

The background to this shooting lies in a ceasefire that exists only on paper, with Israeli occupation forces maintaining their siege of the Strip and continuing to fire on civilians even after the October 2025 truce. Al-Bureij camp, home to generations of refugees, has repeatedly come under sniper and shelling fire, its narrow alleys transformed into shooting galleries where children collecting water or walking to school present easy targets for soldiers positioned hundreds of meters away.

Current developments indicate Imad remains in critical condition with a head wound deliberately inflicted, his survival uncertain in a healthcare system that Israeli bombardment has reduced to field hospitals and overwhelmed trauma wards. Medical teams in central Gaza continue to treat such cases with dwindling supplies, the sniper’s bullet having done what months of siege prepared: the systematic targeting of the most vulnerable.

Strategically, the deliberate sniping of a child serves no military purpose and therefore can only be understood as part of the occupation’s campaign of terror and depopulation. Each child shot, each family displaced from Al-Bureij and camps like it, advances the same objective that the genocide’s planners have pursued since October 2023: making Palestinian life in Gaza impossible, one bullet at a time.

The humanitarian impact is a wound that will never heal even if Imad survives: a childhood ended by a bullet, a family shattered by deliberate fire, and a population that must now count walking near a refugee camp as a mortal risk. Gaza’s children have learned to read the sound of drones and the crack of sniper fire before they have learned to read.

As international attention drifts to other fronts, the trajectory on the ground remains unchanged: soldiers in fortified positions shooting children in open ground, hospitals recording the casualties, and a world that funds, arms, and shields the shooters. What remains clear is that a sniper’s bullet found Imad Salem Zahra’s head this morning in Al-Bureij, and that in Gaza, being a child remains the most dangerous identity in the world.
