US warships are preparing for the possibility of renewed attacks on Iran as Washington considers further military action in the coming weeks.
During a visit to the USS George Washington aircraft carrier strike group operating in the Arabian Sea, WSJ observed US sailors replenishing munitions, including long-range missiles and bunker-buster bombs designed to penetrate fortified underground targets. The carrier is currently involved in enforcing a blockade of Iranian ports and protecting commercial shipping near the Strait of Hormuz.
The preparations come amid reports that the Pentagon has developed options for renewed strikes on Iranian military facilities and infrastructure. US President Donald Trump has also hinted at the possibility of further military action, potentially after the November 3 midterm elections.
However, the military preparations do not confirm that a new attack has been authorised. Reports indicate that the final decision rests with Trump, while renewed strikes could trigger Iranian retaliation and further escalate tensions across West Asia.
