In yet another display of hypocrisy and authoritarianism, Saudi police detained a Palestinian woman in Mecca simply for holding a bag with the Palestinian flag—a peaceful symbol of identity and resistance. The woman, who was told not to make “political statements,” rightly pointed out the double standard: other pilgrims were openly displaying flags of countries like Morocco and Türkiye, yet only the Palestinian flag was deemed unacceptable.
This is not an isolated incident—it’s a reflection of Saudi Arabia’s long-standing betrayal of the Palestinian cause.
Despite being a self-proclaimed leader of the Muslim world, Saudi Arabia has consistently aligned itself with oppressive powers and turned its back on the very people it should be defending. It has not only failed to speak out against the genocide of Palestinians, but it has actively taken part in *anti Palestinian activities.
Take, for instance, the U.S. bombardment of Yemen—a humanitarian catastrophe that the world watched in horror. Saudi airspace was wide open for American warplanes to wreak havoc, even as it postured as a protector of Islam. And yet, a Palestinian flag—a symbol of a people under siege—is treated as a threat within the holiest site in Islam.
This is the pinnacle of hypocrisy.
Saudi Arabia’s regime has shown time and again that it cannot tolerate even the most peaceful gesture of solidarity with Palestine. It has normalized relations with Israel, worked against Palestinian resistance movements, and suppressed any form of advocacy within its borders. The reality is simple: Saudi leadership will never stand with Palestine, not because it can’t—but because it chooses not to.
It chooses silence over justice. It chooses power over principle.
For a nation that claims to uphold the values of Islam, its actions betray those very teachings. True Islamic leadership requires standing with the oppressed, not detaining them. It means raising your voice against genocide, not silencing those who dare to.
Until Saudi Arabia stops acting as an enabler of oppression and starts acting as a defender of the ummah, it will remain nothing more than a hypocritical regime hiding behind holy symbols while betraying the very essence of what they represent.
