Israel Conducts Airstrikes Near Syrian Presidential Palace Amid Sectarian Clashes.

DAMASCUS, Syria — In a significant escalation of regional tensions, Israeli warplanes conducted airstrikes near Syria’s presidential palace in Damascus early Friday, May 2, 2025. This action follows days of intense sectarian clashes between pro-government forces and Druze fighters in southern Syria, resulting in nearly 100 fatalities.

The Israeli government stated that the strikes were a direct response to protect the Druze minority from ongoing violence and to deter Syrian authorities from advancing toward Druze-populated villages. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that the attacks serve as a clear message to Syria’s interim leadership, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, warning against further aggression toward the Druze community.

The Syrian presidency condemned the airstrikes as a “dangerous escalation against state institutions and the sovereignty of the state,” calling on the international community to support Syria in defending its national security and unity.

The recent clashes were reportedly sparked by a controversial audio clip attributed to a Druze cleric, which criticized Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). The cleric denied involvement, but the incident ignited sectarian tensions, leading to violent confrontations in areas like Jaramana and Sahnaya.

Israel’s military actions have included not only airstrikes but also the evacuation of wounded Druze individuals to Israeli hospitals for treatment. However, some Druze leaders in Syria have rejected external intervention, asserting their commitment to a unified Syrian state.

The United Nations and various international actors have expressed concern over the escalating violence, urging all parties to exercise restraint and prioritize the protection of civilians.

As the situation develops, the region remains on high alert, with fears that continued hostilities could further destabilize the already volatile landscape of post-conflict Syria.
