Islamabad, August 15, 2025. In a landmark development, the Palestine Action Coalition of Pakistan, a united platform of Palestinian activist organizations in the country, announced the nation’s first official delegation to join the Global Sumud Flotilla and the Sumud Nusantara Mission. The flotilla will sail alongside delegations from 44 countries worldwide, including eight Asian states: Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, Nepal, and Pakistan, to deliver urgent humanitarian aid and challenge Israel’s long-running blockade of Gaza.
The press conference in Islamabad introduced the delegation members: Dr. Osama Riaz, CEO of Shib e Abi Taalib Foundation; Ismail Khan, prominent youth activist; and Syed Uzair Nizami, young Islamic scholar and head of Mend Your Hearts Foundation. Organizers emphasized that this initiative, formed by collective grassroots organizations under the Palestine Action Coalition, symbolizes not only humanitarian relief but also political solidarity against the siege.
Israel’s blockade of Gaza, in place since 2007, has been widely condemned as collective punishment under international law. Human rights groups accuse Israel of deliberately restricting food, fuel, and medical supplies, weaponizing starvation, and targeting civilian infrastructure. UN reports describe Gaza as the “world’s largest open-air prison,” where children face chronic malnutrition, hospitals function without essential medicines, and families survive under constant military threat.
The flotilla represents a coordinated effort to challenge this system of control. Analysts note its strategic importance: while some regional governments have normalized ties with Tel Aviv, countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and now Pakistan have chosen active resistance through solidarity missions. The participation of 44 countries underscores that the Palestinian struggle is no longer viewed as a regional conflict, but as a universal human rights issue.
Humanitarian stakes remain severe. Gaza’s population of over 2.3 million faces conditions of siege-induced famine and lack of medical access. The Pakistani delegation will carry medical aid, relief supplies, and media coverage to highlight these realities before the world. Organizers underlined that “this is more than aid it is defiance, it is remembrance, it is the refusal to let Gaza be erased.”
Reactions to the announcement were strong among civil society networks worldwide, praising Pakistan’s step as part of a larger Asian solidarity. At the same time, Israel has a record of violently intercepting flotillas, raising concerns that participants may face obstruction or aggression at sea.
As the coalition prepares to depart, the message is clear: Gaza is not forgotten, and the blockade will continue to be challenged by the collective will of nations and people across the globe. The Sumud Flotilla will test not only Israel’s determination to enforce its siege but also the international community’s willingness to defend the principles of justice and humanitarian law.
