Qatar and UAE reject the Egyptian proposal of establishing a NATO-style Islamic military alliance.

Egyptian, Qatari, and U.S. forces participate in the Bright Star 2025 joint military exercise near Cairo’s iconic pyramids, September 7, 2025.

Egypt’s attempt to launch a NATO-style Islamic military alliance under the 1950 Joint Defence Treaty collapsed at the Doha summit, after Qatar and the UAE opposed the plan, citing disputes over leadership and scope. Egyptian diplomats confirmed that President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi left Doha “deeply frustrated” as his proposal for a joint defensive force was struck down, exposing once again the divisions that have crippled collective Islamic security at a moment of escalating Israeli aggression.

The proposal, presented by Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, called for a rapid-response Islamic force to shield member states from external threats with Israel as the clearest and most urgent one. Cairo argued its military experience made it the rightful leader, while Saudi Arabia demanded command. The impasse left the initiative abandoned. Within days, Riyadh instead signed a defence pact with nuclear-armed Pakistan, underscoring the lack of consensus and the desperation to find alternatives amid mounting insecurity following Israel’s unprecedented strike on Doha earlier this month.

This rejection is more than a failed proposal; it signals a collective paralysis at a time when Gaza is enduring a humanitarian catastrophe. Israel’s bombardment has killed tens of thousands of civilians, targeted hospitals, flattened neighborhoods, and left children starving under siege. While international rights groups and the U.N. warn of war crimes and possible genocide, many Islamic governments remain trapped in rivalries, debating over prestige and power rather than forming a unified front to defend the oppressed.

The silence or complicity of states deepening economic and military ties with Western capitals that openly arm and shield Israel adds to the betrayal. The United States and the United Kingdom, by vetoing ceasefires and supplying weapons, are not just passive enablers but active participants in the atrocities. For Islamic leaders to remain entangled with them while neglecting their duty to protect Muslim lives contradicts both the principles of justice in international law and the Qur’anic command to uphold the sanctity of innocent life.

Strategically, the collapse of this alliance keeps the Islamic world dependent on fragmented arrangements and Western protection, leaving Israel free to act with impunity. Each failed attempt at unity strengthens Israel’s hand, erodes credibility, and deepens the perception that Islamic leaders have traded their role as guardians of the Ummah for temporary deals and foreign approval. This duplicity is not just political weakness; it is a moral failing.

For now, Egypt’s initiative lies in ruins, the Islamic world remains divided, and Gaza continues to bleed. Unless there is a genuine shift toward unity rooted in Islamic justice and a commitment to protect the oppressed, history will record not just Israel’s crimes but also the failure of those who could have stopped them and chose instead to turn away.
