More than 50,000 soldiers serving in the Israeli occupation army hold at least one additional citizenship, according to data obtained through Israel’s Freedom of Information Law by the Israeli NGO Hatzlacha. The figures expose the deep Western footprint inside the military apparatus conducting the genocidal war on Gaza, with the United States accounting for the largest share.

‎At least 12,135 soldiers in the Israeli military hold United States passports, making American dual nationals the single largest foreign-linked bloc within the force. France follows with more than 6,000 dual nationals, while Russia, Germany, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom are also among the most represented countries. The scale of this foreign-linked presence highlights how the assault on Gaza is not an isolated regional operation but one sustained with extensive Western ties.

‎The data lays bare how deeply Western citizens are embedded in the structure of a military accused globally of carrying out large-scale violations of international humanitarian law. Entire neighborhoods in Gaza have been flattened, civilian infrastructure destroyed, and thousands of civilians killed in what legal experts and human rights groups have described as acts consistent with genocide. Against this backdrop, the presence of tens of thousands of foreign passport holders raises serious moral and legal questions.

‎Critics argue that the ongoing genocide in Gaza is being directly fueled by these Western countries, not only through weapons transfers, diplomatic protection, and financial backing, but also through the active participation of their own citizens within the Israeli military. They say the scale of dual nationals serving in uniform during a campaign marked by mass civilian deaths and destruction exposes a deeper level of complicity, placing moral and legal responsibility not just on Israel, but on the governments whose nationals are embedded in its armed forces.

‎As the war continues and global scrutiny deepens, the revelation that more than 50,000 soldiers hold foreign citizenship adds another layer to the international fallout. The Gaza war increasingly appears not only as an Israeli military operation, but as one materially and humanly supported by Western nations whose involvement extends beyond policy statements into boots on the ground.
