‎Dubai’s Deputy Police Chief, Lieutenant‑General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, publicly urged Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states to strengthen and formalize cooperation with Israel, arguing that closer ties would better serve their strategic interests. His comments, circulated on social media, suggested that regional states should prioritize these partnerships more openly, a position that has sparked significant debate across the Middle East.

Tamim’s remarks come against a backdrop of evolving Gulf‑Israel relations that began formally with the 2020 Abraham Accords between the United Arab Emirates and Israel. These accords institutionalized diplomatic, economic, and security ties, particularly between Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv, and have continued despite ongoing criticism tied to the conflict in Gaza.

‎Supporters of tighter Gulf‑Israel ties frame such cooperation primarily as a strategic counterweight to Iran’s regional influence and as a means to enhance defence, technology, and economic linkages with Western‑aligned partners. Some Gulf officials argue that shared security concerns justify deeper collaboration even as conflicts persist elsewhere.

‎However, Tamim’s comments have drawn sharp criticism from many observers and regional populations. Critics argue that publicly promoting deeper cooperation with Israel while the Palestinian issue remains unresolved undermines longstanding Arab solidarity on Palestinian statehood and risks alienating domestic and regional constituencies. For many in the Arab world, political legitimacy still heavily depends on perceived support for Palestinians.

‎The debate also reflects wider tensions within Gulf states themselves. While some governments pursue close security and intelligence ties with Israel and the United States, broader public sentiment and regional media continue to emphasize humanitarian concerns in Gaza and the need for an equitable political solution. Analysts note that this can create a disconnect between official strategy and popular opinion across the Middle East.

‎Tamim’s intervention has renewed questions about how far Gulf leaderships are willing to go in aligning with Israel when decades of Arab public opinion have remained hostile to normalisation without progress on Palestinian aspirations. Critics of such alignment describe it as a strategic gamble that prioritises geopolitical calculation over moral and humanitarian considerations.
