Yemen’s AnsarAllah has strongly rejected Saudi Arabia’s allegation that it launched a drone toward Mecca, calling the accusation a deliberate fabrication designed to mislead public opinion. The Saudi-led coalition claimed that its air defences intercepted and destroyed a drone south of Mecca on Tuesday evening, September 15, before it entered restricted airspace around the holy city. Saudi authorities issued security alerts in Mecca and presented the incident as an attempted attack on one of Islam’s holiest sites.
In response, AnsarAllah political and military officials categorically denied that Yemen had targeted Mecca or posed any threat to Islamic holy sites. Yahya Saree, AnsarAllah’s military spokesperson, said the “fabrications and lies” promoted by the Saudi government about targeting Mecca “cannot deceive anyone,” insisting that Yemeni operations are directed at Saudi oil facilities and military bases far from the holy sites. Hazem al-Assad, a member of AnsarAllah’s political bureau, similarly described the allegation as an old and discredited attempt to turn Muslims against Yemen’s resistance.
AnsarAllah’s statement accused the Saudi government of exploiting the religious importance of Mecca to justify further escalation and to conceal its own record in the Arabian Peninsula. The group said Saudi claims about a Yemeni threat to the holy city were intended to create a false narrative at a time when cross-border hostilities are intensifying. Yemen has repeatedly maintained that its retaliatory operations target facilities linked to Saudi military activity and energy infrastructure, rather than civilian or religious locations.
The competing claims come amid a sharp escalation between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s resistance. Saudi authorities have reported interceptions of drones and missiles in the kingdom, while AnsarAllah has accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out dozens of airstrikes across Yemeni governorates in recent days. Earlier reports said Yemeni operations had targeted military sites in southern Saudi Arabia, including facilities linked to the Saudi war effort, while Saudi forces continued air attacks inside Yemen.
The dispute over Mecca is particularly sensitive because of the city’s religious status for Muslims worldwide. Saudi Arabia’s coalition stated that the drone was destroyed before it entered prohibited airspace, while AnsarAllah rejected the premise that Mecca was ever a target. No independent evidence publicly available at the time of reporting established the drone’s intended target, leaving the Saudi allegation and Yemen’s denial as competing accounts of the incident.
