Egyptian government kills a university student by torture in police custody.

Egyptian security forces have been accused of routinely torturing and mistreating detainees.
Ayman Sabry Abdel Wahab, a 21-year-old university student, has died following a week of alleged torture inside an Egyptian police station, according to the Egyptian Network for Human Rights (ENHR). His death on Friday at Belqas Police Station in Dakhalia governorate has sparked outrage and protests, with rights groups accusing authorities of systematic abuse and impunity.

Egypt’s security apparatus has long faced accusations of human rights violations, including torture, arbitrary detention, and enforced disappearances. Under President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the state has clamped down on dissent, with thousands imprisoned on politically motivated charges. Police brutality in detention centers has been documented by multiple human rights organizations, but accountability remains rare.

Sabry was reportedly arrested on 19 July while heading to a barber shop and detained at Belqas Police Station, where ENHR claims he was subjected to “deadly torture” that severely impacted his health. His family says he collapsed in front of guards during a visit after handing them a list of medications, but he was neither treated nor examined. His death was only confirmed through his lawyer nearly a day later. Video footage shows demonstrators clashing with security forces outside Belqas court in response to the incident.

While Sabry’s death may seem localized, it underscores a broader pattern of systemic abuse that could further damage Egypt’s international image. Continued reports of torture and deaths in custody may increase pressure from global human rights watchdogs and strain Egypt’s diplomatic relationships with Western governments, particularly those providing military and financial aid contingent on human rights compliance.

This incident has renewed concerns over the treatment of detainees in Egypt, particularly students and young men frequently targeted during arbitrary arrests. ENHR asserts that Sabry’s case is emblematic of a wider policy of impunity, with no independent oversight mechanisms or credible investigations into abuses. Families of detainees live in fear, with many reporting similar patterns of neglect, torture, and official cover-ups.

Ahmed Attar, executive director of ENHR, condemned the killing, calling it “a natural consequence of the unchecked power of the executive authorities.” He criticized the lack of action by Egypt’s public prosecution and blamed the state for enabling ongoing human rights abuses. International rights organizations have not yet issued official statements, though global advocacy networks are monitoring the situation closely.

As of now, Egyptian authorities maintain that Sabry died of cardiac arrest, a claim disputed by his family, who say his body bore visible signs of beatings and electric shocks. With tensions still high in Belqas, rights groups are calling for an independent investigation and accountability for those responsible. It remains to be seen whether Egyptian prosecutors will respond or if Sabry’s death will become another unpunished entry in a growing list of custodial deaths.
