Saudi Arabia Arrests Egyptian Pilgrim for Raising Palestinian Flag at Kaabah

An Egyptian man stood in front of the Holy Kaaba in Mecca and raised the Palestine flag before he was shortly detained by Saudi forces.
Saudi authorities have arrested an Egyptian pilgrim in Kaabah after he raised the Palestinian flag near the Kaaba and called for an end to the siege on Gaza. While Saudi officials cite long-standing rules banning political expression at Islam’s holiest sites, the incident has renewed scrutiny over what critics say is a targeted suppression of pro-Palestinian activism.

Saudi Arabia enforces a strict ban on political slogans, protests, and national symbols during Hajj and Umrah, arguing that such measures preserve the spiritual focus of pilgrimage. However, over the past several years, these rules have been applied in multiple high-profile cases specifically involving gestures of support for Palestine. In 2023, a British pilgrim was detained for wearing a white keffiyeh and Palestinian-colored prayer beads. Similar incidents have occurred at least three to four times in recent years, raising concerns about selective enforcement.

According to local reports, the Egyptian pilgrim was arrested shortly after displaying the Palestinian flag and verbally condemning the humanitarian blockade of Gaza. Saudi security forces removed him from the Kaabah premises, citing a violation of religious site regulations. The identity and condition of the pilgrim have not been officially disclosed. The incident has since sparked regional and online backlash, with many accusing Saudi Arabia of stifling peaceful expressions of solidarity.

The arrest comes at a time when Saudi Arabia is seeking closer ties with Israel and positioning itself as a key player in regional diplomacy. These efforts, however, risk generating backlash from across the Muslim world, where public sentiment remains strongly supportive of the Palestinian cause. Continued suppression of proPalestine gestures during pilgrimage could undermine the kingdom’s image as a guardian of Islamic values and unity.

While Saudi Arabia maintains its actions are apolitical, rights advocates argue that the enforcement of these rules disproportionately targets those supporting Palestine. The growing list of arrests over peaceful symbols of solidarity reflects a wider trend of criminalizing activism, both offline and online, under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s leadership. Citizens and pilgrims alike now face uncertainty over what constitutes a punishable act.

Though Saudi authorities have not issued an official comment, human rights organizations and social media users across the region have expressed concern. Many see the arrest not as a neutral enforcement of religious site rules, but as part of a broader policy of silencing support for Palestine. Calls for clarity, transparency, and consistency in applying these regulations continue to grow.

The Egyptian pilgrim remains in custody, and no official charges have been announced. As similar incidents pile up, observers warn of the chilling effect this could have on freedom of expression within sacred spaces. While Saudi Arabia emphasizes religious neutrality, critics argue that these policies increasingly resemble a systematic effort to suppress Palestinian advocacy under the guise of spiritual discipline.
