India Strikes Pakistan in ‘Operation Sindoor’; Heavy Casualties as Tensions Soar.

May 6, 2025,
India has launched a large-scale military operation, Operation Sindoor, targeting nine locations across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, triggering the deadliest escalation between the two countries in over two decades. The strikes have resulted in dozens of casualties and a surge in cross-border hostilities, raising fears of a broader conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbors.

According to official statements from Islamabad, the Indian strikes killed at least 26 people and left 46 injured, including several civilians. In response, Pakistan launched retaliatory attacks, which New Delhi says killed eight people on its side of the border. Both governments have convened emergency national security meetings to assess the evolving situation.

India stated that its military operation targeted “terrorist infrastructure” in areas allegedly used to plan and launch attacks against Indian territory. The official statement described the strikes as “measured and non-escalatory”, claiming that no Pakistani military facilities were targeted. However, on-the-ground reports from Pakistan contradict this, the Indian strikes killed innocent civilians under the pretext of targeting terrorists. Among the sites hit were a school and two mosques, which India reportedly labeled as terror bases, leading to significant civilian casualties and infrastructure damage.

In Pakistan’s Punjab province, a missile hit a mosque in Bahawalpur, killing a child and wounding two others. In Pakistan-administered Kashmir, significant damage was reported in the cities of Muzaffarabad and Kotli.

In retaliation, Pakistan have shot down five Indian aircraft and an Indian drone and captured several Indian soldiers. The Pakistani military has labeled India’s actions an “act of war”, vowing a decisive and proportionate response.

Following the initial strikes, intense artillery and gunfire exchanges erupted along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir, affecting civilians on both sides. Witnesses reported damage to residential areas, with heavy shelling continuing into Wednesday afternoon.

India launched Operation Sindoor in response to the recent attack on tourists in Pahalgam, which it claims was orchestrated by Pakistan. However, India has not provided concrete evidence linking Pakistan to the attack. Instead, New Delhi is attempting to convince global powers by pointing to Pakistan’s past record on terrorism, arguing that it is likely responsible. This justification has been used to carry out strikes that primarily hit civilian areas, leading to widespread casualties. While the operation has been used domestically to project strength and appease public sentiment, analysts suggest that, from a strategic standpoint, Operation Sindoor has failed to achieve any meaningful military or diplomatic objective.

International reactions are pouring in, with calls for immediate de-escalation. The United Nations has expressed grave concern, urging both India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint and avoid further military confrontation. The United States has also called for calm, expressing hope that the situation will be resolved swiftly and peacefully.

Analysts warn that the scale and intensity of the current confrontation surpass previous episodes, including the 2019 crisis, and that further escalation could spiral out of control.

As both sides continue to exchange fire and assess damage, the region stands on the brink of a potentially catastrophic conflict, with urgent diplomatic efforts needed to avert war.
