Hamas has confirmed the martyrdom of senior Al-Qassam Brigades commander Izz al-Din al-Haddad, who was killed alongside members of his family during a series of Israeli airstrikes targeting Gaza City. According to local reports, the strikes targeted a residential complex and a vehicle in the city, killing and wounding several Palestinians. Al-Haddad’s wife and children were also reported killed in the attack, while funeral processions were later held across Gaza as Palestinians bid farewell to one of Hamas’s most senior remaining military figures.

The assassination comes amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, which has devastated large parts of Gaza and resulted in heavy casualties since the conflict escalated in October 2023. Al-Haddad had risen through the ranks of Hamas over decades and became one of the movement’s key military leaders following the deaths of Mohammad Deif and Mohammad Sinwar. Known for maintaining a low public profile, he was considered a major figure within Hamas’s military and internal security structures.

Current developments indicate that Israeli forces carried out the operation after what Israeli media described as multiple previous opportunities to target al-Haddad. Reports stated that the strike involved heavy bombardment on residential areas of Gaza City, causing further destruction and civilian casualties in already heavily damaged neighborhoods. Rescue teams and medical workers continued operations following the attack as hospitals across Gaza remain under severe pressure due to ongoing airstrikes and shortages of supplies.

Strategically, the killing of al-Haddad represents another major attempt by Israel to weaken Hamas’s senior military leadership through targeted assassinations. Analysts say the continued elimination of top commanders is intended to disrupt Hamas’s command structure and operational capabilities, though previous assassinations have also led to further escalation and prolonged conflict across the region.

The humanitarian impact of the strike has drawn renewed concern, particularly because the attack hit residential areas and reportedly killed members of al-Haddad’s family alongside other civilians. Ongoing bombardment in Gaza has continued to deepen the humanitarian crisis.

Reactions emerged across Palestinian territories and the wider region following confirmation of al-Haddad’s death. Hamas supporters and resistance-aligned groups mourned him as a senior commander and symbol of the armed resistance in Gaza, while funeral gatherings and prayers were held in his honor. Israeli officials, meanwhile, described the operation as part of continued military efforts against Hamas leadership.

For now, tensions remain extremely high as Israeli airstrikes continue across Gaza and fears grow over further escalation in the conflict. Observers expect that the assassination of al-Haddad could influence both military developments on the ground and ongoing discussions surrounding ceasefire efforts in the coming days.
