The Palestinian Prisoners’ Club has stated that Israeli occupation prison authorities are carrying out major medical procedures on Palestinian detainees without notifying or obtaining the consent of their families. The organization urged international bodies to intervene and ensure proper medical care for prisoners held in Israeli occupation custody.
According to the organization, one of the most alarming cases involves a 15-year-old Palestinian detainee who underwent open-heart surgery while in Israeli occupation custody. The group said the child’s family was neither informed nor asked for permission before the operation, and only learned of the procedure after it had already taken place. It described the incident as a serious violation of the rights of child detainees and their families, and as a breach of basic medical ethics in detention.
The organization also highlighted the case of Malik Hani Jibril, a wounded Palestinian detainee who was detained after sustaining injuries. According to the Prisoners’ Club, he later underwent surgery that resulted in the amputation of his right foot. The group said his case reflects the condition of wounded detainees who require specialized medical treatment while in detention, and who often face delays in receiving appropriate care.
The Palestinian Prisoners’ Club urged the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the United Nations, and other international humanitarian and human rights organizations to immediately intervene. It called for independent oversight of medical care inside Israeli occupation prisons, regular access to detainees, and greater transparency regarding medical procedures performed on prisoners.
The organization argued that these cases are not isolated incidents but part of broader concerns over healthcare provided to Palestinian detainees. It called for investigations into the circumstances surrounding the reported surgeries and stressed that families should be informed of any major medical procedure involving their relatives, particularly when minors are involved. It noted that medical decisions made without family involvement undermine both legal protections and human dignity.
The appeal comes amid continued scrutiny of conditions inside Israeli occupation detention facilities. The Palestinian Prisoners’ Club renewed its call for international monitoring and accountability, urging global institutions to ensure that Palestinian detainees receive appropriate medical treatment and that their rights are protected in accordance with international humanitarian and human rights law.
