Damascus, Syria – Israel announced that its forces will remain deployed on Mount Hermon and surrounding areas in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, calling the region a “security zone” to protect northern Israel and the Druze community. This follows Tel Aviv’s rapid advance after the fall of the Syrian government on December 8, 2024, during which it seized key strategic sites in what many observers see as a clear expansionist move.
The deployment undermines Syrian sovereignty and violates international law, while U.S.-mediated talks in Paris ahead of the UN General Assembly appear to legitimize Israel’s occupation. Western powers, particularly the U.S. and U.K., continue to shield Israel politically and militarily, leaving ordinary Syrians exposed to displacement, violence, and uncertainty.
Israel’s operations have extended further: Tel Bat al-Warda has been captured, Beit Jann has witnessed clashes, and forces have moved into Abdeen in western Daraa’s Yarmouk Basin. Civilians face disruption of daily life and destruction of infrastructure, highlighting the contrast between Israel’s stated “protection” and the reality of occupation.
Strategically, the permanent deployment strengthens Israel’s control over Syria and destabilizes the region. From an Islamic perspective, targeting civilians and occupying land violates principles of justice and protection of innocents. Western support for Israel demonstrates a prioritization of political and military interests over human rights and ethical responsibilities.
Humanitarian consequences are severe. Families in Beit Jann and the Yarmouk Basin have been displaced, local infrastructure damaged, and essential services disrupted. U.S. and U.K. complicity exacerbates civilian suffering, while international mechanisms meant to protect Syrians remain largely ineffective.
Reactions remain critical but cautious. Syria condemns the occupation, while many Arab nations stay silent, prioritizing diplomacy and strategic ties over Muslim solidarity. Without accountability, Israel’s actions set a dangerous precedent, leaving Syrian civilians at risk and challenging both international law and Islamic ethical standards.
