Leading ship of the Global Sumud Flotilla gets bombed in a drone strike while at the Tunisian port ahead of sailing to Gaza.

The main leading ship of the Global Sumud Flotilla, on its way to deliver aid to Gaza, was hit by a suspected drone overnight at Tunisia’s Sidi Bou Said port.

The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), a civilian-led maritime convoy carrying humanitarian aid destined for Gaza, reported that on the night of Monday, September 8, 2025, its Portuguese-flagged vessel dubbed the “Family Boat” was struck by a suspected drone in Tunisia’s Sidi Bou Said port, igniting a fire but leaving all six crew members and passengers uninjured. Tunisian authorities have denied any drone involvement, attributing the fire to an internal accident.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, initiated in mid-2025, brings together over 50 vessels and more than 15,000 participants from 44 countries in a mass effort to challenge Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza and deliver desperately needed aid. Gaza has endured severe shortages, famine warnings, and mounting civilian casualties with over 64,000 reported deaths as a result of Israel’s tightened siege and military campaign following the October 2023 conflict.

Footage released by GSF shows a luminous object allegedly a drone descending onto the ship before the ensuing explosion and fire. Witness Miguel Duarte described seeing a drone hover mere meters above the deck moments before the blast. In contrast, Tunisia’s National Guard called the drone claim “completely unfounded,” suggesting the fire began among life jackets, possibly from a cigarette or lighter, and found no evidence of external attack. GSF has launched an investigation and plans a press conference soon. Pro-Palestinian crowds rallied outside the port, raising flags and chanting solidarity slogans.

If confirmed as an attack, the drone strike would signal an alarming escalation: aggression reaching beyond Gaza into international or neutral waters, potentially violating Tunisian sovereignty and injecting further instability into the region. It would reveal Israel’s willingness to extend military actions to stifle humanitarian solidarity efforts. Meanwhile, countries like the U.S., U.K., and EU members longtime arms providers and diplomatic backers of Israel stand complicit, undercutting any narrative of moral objectivity or neutrality.

This incident underscores how perilous even humanitarian aid efforts have become. Drones targeting a civilian mission delivering food, medicine, and relief to suffering Palestinians not only reflects moral bankruptcy but violates both Islamic and international humanitarian norms: the protection of non-combatants and the right to life and dignity. Islam emphasizes mercy, solidarity, and justice for the oppressed – principles flagrantly contradicted by this action. The silence or passive support of Western allies further betrays these values, casting them as enablers of injustice.

  • GSF and activists condemned the incident as a deliberate act of terror, vowing to press on.

  • Tunisian National Guard emphatically denied any drone involvement, maintaining the fire was accidental.

  • UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, present at the flotilla, warned that if proven a drone attack, it would constitute aggression against both Tunisia and international law.

  • Israel has not commented publicly.

  • Western allies, particularly the U.S. and U.K., have yet to respond, further exposing their implicit support.

The Family Boat incident has yet to be independently verified, but its symbolism is unmistakable. Whether a drone strike or not, humanitarian solidarity with Gaza is treated as a threat. Israel’s siege continues with impunity, bolstered by Western powers and ignored by Arab regimes that choose trade and alliances over justice.

For the Global Sumud Flotilla, the mission persists. For the international community, the question lingers: how long will silence and complicity eclipse the obligation to protect the oppressed? In Islamic terms, siding with the oppressor is itself oppression. In human terms, ignoring the starving and besieged is a betrayal of conscience.

History will record who chose to sail for justice, and who chose to look away.
