Pakistani delegation leader Mushtaq Ahmed Khan returns home to a hero’s welcome following his release from Israeli custody.

Islamabad, Pakistan – Former Pakistani senator and pro-Palestinian activist Mushtaq Ahmed Khan returned to Pakistan on Thursday after being released from Israeli custody, receiving a massive and emotional welcome at Islamabad International Airport. Khan, who led the Pakistani delegation organized by the Palestine Action Coalition to the Global Sumud Flotilla, was greeted by thousands of supporters waving Palestinian flags, chanting slogans condemning Israeli aggression, and reaffirming solidarity with Gaza’s besieged civilians.

Khan’s detention by Israeli forces occurred on October 2 while the flotilla was en route to Gaza in international waters. The Pakistani delegation, one among many international teams, carried humanitarian aid aimed at alleviating the suffering of Palestinian civilians under Israel’s long-standing blockade. During his five-day detention at Ktzi’ot Prison in the Negev desert, Khan reported harsh treatment, including being handcuffed, blindfolded, threatened with firearms and dogs, and denied water and medical care, which he and other detainees protested through a hunger strike.

The Palestine Action Coalition of Pakistan, which organized the Pakistani delegation, has been a leading force in mobilizing civil society to support Gaza. The coalition formally denounced statements by Pakistani leaders that misrepresented the delegation, emphasizing that Khan’s mission was an independent civilian effort, and highlighting the contrast between government rhetoric and meaningful action for Palestinian rights. The coalition underscored that its delegation represents Pakistan’s principled stand against Israeli oppression, rather than political expediency.

Israel’s interception of the flotilla highlights its persistent disregard for international law and human rights. Experts argue that boarding unarmed humanitarian ships in international waters constitutes a violation of maritime law, while the continued blockade of Gaza, which has led to severe shortages of food, water, medicine, and electricity, amounts to collective punishment prohibited under the Fourth Geneva Convention. These actions, coupled with ongoing bombardment of civilian areas, draw widespread condemnation as ethically indefensible and contrary to both human and Islamic principles that emphasize the protection of innocents and the oppressed.

The complicity of Israel’s allies, including the United States and the United Kingdom, further amplifies the crisis. By providing military and diplomatic support, they shield policies that result in civilian suffering and displacement. Arab regimes, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Bahrain, are also criticized for silence or normalization with Tel Aviv, prioritizing strategic deals over moral and religious obligations to uphold justice for oppressed Palestinians. These actions contradict core Islamic values of fairness, protection of life, and solidarity with the oppressed.

Khan’s release and return to Pakistan have reinvigorated discussions on global accountability, highlighting the need for international pressure to end Gaza’s blockade and to challenge the structures enabling continued oppression. Human rights organizations and legal experts continue to call for Israel’s actions to be scrutinized under international law, emphasizing the illegality of targeting civilians or humanitarian missions.

The Palestinian cause, amplified through the courageous actions of activists like Khan and organized support from coalitions such as the Palestine Action Coalition, remains a rallying point for global civil society. Pakistanis across the country have demonstrated broad support, affirming that while political actors may falter, public advocacy and ethical solidarity endure. Khan’s return is seen as a symbol of resilience and a renewed commitment to defend human rights, uphold Islamic ethical standards, and challenge the oppressive measures inflicted upon Gaza by Israel and its global backers.

As Khan resumes his activism, the spotlight remains on Israel’s continued violations, the enabling role of Western powers, and the failure of regional actors to uphold justice. The international community faces mounting pressure to act decisively, ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches Gaza, that perpetrators of unlawful detentions and violence are held accountable, and that solidarity with the oppressed is more than mere rhetoric.
